Project Overview

This side-return extension in Chiswick reclaimed the narrow alleyway beside an Edwardian terraced property, nearly doubling the kitchen footprint from 12sqm to 22sqm. The design incorporated a full-length glazed roof slot along the boundary wall, bathing the previously dark kitchen in natural daylight. A large central island with integrated induction hob and breakfast bar became the focal point, with bespoke shaker-style cabinetry in a heritage green finish complementing the Edwardian character of the property. Bi-fold doors at the rear connect the kitchen to a small courtyard garden with new porcelain paving.

Challenges

  • Maximising a narrow side-return plot just 1.2m wide
  • Maintaining light to the adjacent dining room after enclosing the side return
  • Ensuring structural stability when removing the side wall
  • Navigating Chiswick conservation area design requirements

Solutions

  • Full-length rooflight slot to maintain daylight for both rooms
  • Glazed internal screen separating kitchen and dining for light flow
  • Steel portal frame to support the existing structure
  • Sympathetic material palette approved by the conservation officer
